How this calculator works
The CGPA Calculator computes your Cumulative Grade Point Average based on the Anna University credit system. It uses the formula: Sum of (Credits × Grade Points) / Total Credits.
- O Grade: 10 points
- A+ Grade: 9 points
- A Grade: 8 points
- B+ Grade: 7 points
- B Grade: 6 points
- C Grade: 5 points
By entering your SGPA (Semester GPA) and the total credits for each semester, this tool accurately calculates your running cumulative average.
How to use this calculator
- Step 1: Select the number of semesters you have completed.
- Step 2: For each semester, enter your SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average).
- Step 3: Enter the total number of credits for that semester (e.g., 22, 24).
- Step 4: Click Calculate to see your overall CGPA.
- Step 5: Check the percentage conversion if you need it for placements!
Example Calculations
Example 1: First Year Student
Inputs: Sem 1 (SGPA 8.5, 22 credits), Sem 2 (SGPA 8.0, 24 credits).
Result: [(8.5*22) + (8.0*24)] / (22+24) = (187 + 192) / 46 = 8.23 CGPA.
Example 2: Recovering from a bad semester
Inputs: Sem 1 (6.5 SGPA, 22 cr), Sem 2 (7.0 SGPA, 24 cr), Sem 3 (8.5 SGPA, 23 cr).
Result: (143 + 168 + 195.5) / 69 = 7.34 CGPA. Notice how a good Sem 3 pulled the average up significantly!
Example 3: Consistency pays off
Inputs: 8.2 across all 6 semesters.
Result: 8.20 CGPA. Consistent SGPAs result in a stable, predictable CGPA.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between SGPA and CGPA?
SGPA is your average for a single semester. CGPA is the cumulative average of all your semesters combined, weighted by credits.
How do I convert CGPA to percentage?
For the latest Anna University regulations, the conversion is generally CGPA * 10 = Percentage (e.g., 8.5 CGPA = 85%). Older regulations used a different formula.
Why do credits matter?
A subject with 4 credits impacts your GPA twice as much as a subject with 2 credits. Always prioritize high-credit subjects.
What is a good CGPA for placements?
Generally, maintaining a CGPA above 7.5 clears the cut-off for most IT companies. Core and top-tier product companies may ask for 8.0 or 8.5+.
What happens if I have an arrear?
When you clear the arrear, the new grade replaces the U grade in the calculation. However, the attempt count is recorded on your transcript.
Does this calculator store my marks?
