Everything you need to know about engineering internals in Tamil Nadu.
For most engineering students studying under Anna University or affiliated autonomous colleges, internal marks form a crucial component of the final grade. Depending on your regulation (like R2021), internals carry significant weight—usually up to 40% of your total marks for a subject.
The standard distribution typically involves three Continuous Assessment Tests (CATs) and assignments/seminars. The calculation generally scales your 50-mark CAT exams down to a specific weightage (like 12 marks each), and adds assignment scores (usually 4 marks).
Many students make the mistake of ignoring internal exams and focusing only on the end-semester university exams. This is a critical error. Good internal marks (scoring 30+ out of 40) act as a massive safety net. If a university paper is exceptionally tough, your high internal marks will ensure you still easily cross the 50% combined passing threshold.
Conversely, if you have very low internals (e.g., 15/40), you will be forced to score significantly higher (e.g., 60/100) in the university exam just to scrape a passing grade.
Failing one CAT exam is not the end of the world. Because all three CATs are averaged or added together, scoring high in the remaining two exams can completely offset a failure in the first one.
Practical/Lab internals usually depend on your observation notebook, record completion, and a model practical exam. The weightage is different from theory papers, often relying more heavily on daily continuous assessment.
